Notes

Profile

An action modelled on Glenn McGrath's, and, at the domestic level at least, a McGrathesque ability to trouble batsmen with springy bounce from a length, quickly marked Avishkar Salvi out as a long-term prospect for the national team. Salvi's climb has been worthy: In the space of a year he went from reserve seamer to Mumbai's spearhead, frequently filching five-fors in the Ranji Trophy. He shone with India A in the West Indies early in 2003, and again in England later that year, featuring strongly in both the average and wickets columns. The cornerstones of Salvi's progress have been the strength he has added to his lanky frame and the order he has provided to his run-up. He was blooded in a one-day triangular in Dhaka in April 2003, at a time when he was running hot, and he remains a strong contender for the national side sooner rather than later.
